Early season roost hunts with your best turkey decoy
Early season hunts can be tough. The real problem is the toms are with the hens all day, making it nearly impossible for your turkey decoy to pull them off the girls. Your best chance at calling in a mature tom is when he has no hens, and sometimes this means the 5 minute window between when the hens fly up and when the toms fly up.
Set your turkey decoy in the roost and don’t call until the hens fly up
It takes patience, but if you put your turkey decoy in a known roost area and wait until the hens fly up to call, you may be able to call that tom in. He won’t leave the hens, but after they fly up your window opens. Call aggressively to get that bird to come looking for the last hen on the ground. Be that bitch and you may kill that tom that will not come when he has hens.
He will come to your turkey decoy because it is the only one left
Your odds go way up when you are the only game in town. Be patient when the birds are henned hard early season. Find the roost and be the last girl on the ground to score an early season tom with your new turkey decoy.
