2013 dsd jake
dsd jake made some changes to its 2013 dsd jake decoy lineup this spring, mainly color changes. They decided to add some bronze to the breast area of their jake decoy, which is always present when the sun is hitting the iridescent feathers of a male turkey. If you study alot of turkey pictures or take note when you are in the field, you will realize it is impossible to replicate the iridescence on a turkey decoy because it only occurs when the sun reflects off the feathers and back to your eye. When the sun is behind the bird his breast feathers are much darker than when it is bouncing off of them, and when the clouds roll in or it’s raining, the feathers turn almost black. The back feathers lack this sheen and are always black no matter where the sun is.
2013 dsd jake is now even more like our Best Turkey Decoys
When Dave Constantine painted our Dakota Jake Turkey decoy, he made the breast a bronze sheen and the back black, just like a real turkey with the sun bouncing off of him. The 2013 dsd jake has the same pattern as our highly effective jake decoy, but he did not change the price. It still runs twice as much. Our BTD is $89 and ships in 2 days and we pay the freight, while a 2013 dsd jake jake will set you back $159.95 plus freight. Ouch. The new paint scheme will not make the 2013 dsd jake decoy ‘better’, just different. Our jake turkey decoy would most likely work the same with a black or bronze chest, but it’s nice to see the 2013 dsd jake crew thought our color scheme looked a little better than the plain black.
2013 dsd jake has a flocked back
For 2013 dsd jake flocked the back of their jake and tom decoy with the concept that when they strut, the feathers are black. I have never been a huge fan of flocking decoys as it makes them appear dull, and a wild turkeys feathers always have a certain sheen to them. The hens may be duller, and a better candidate for flocking, but I personally do not care for it on male birds. The other reason I do not care for the 2013 dsd jake flocking idea is durability. A high end decoy should last forever, and the flock finish is much harder to care for. The near velvet like texture is prone to being crushed or scraped off, and while it most likely will not impact the performance of the 2013 dsd jake decoys, it will impact their appearance down the road.
Many do not realize that the paint process on a high end decoy is much different from a $25 unit. The paint is not applied on the surface, it is impregnated. It actually soaks into the polymer and pigments the plastic. Durability is incredible, and you don’t even need a bag for a properly constructed decoy. Throw it in the back of your truck and let it bounce around for awhile and see how it looks. The paint will wear some but it will not chip crack or peel guaranteed.
High end turkey decoys are starting to catch the eye of the hunter and for good reason. More turkeys think these creations are real, and the 2013 dsd jake turkey decoys are no exception. They are a high quality replication that will bag more birds, but are twice the price of a Dakota Jake that costs half as much. If you choose to run the 2013 dsd jake decoys, you will enjoy a fun filled spring.
