Best turkey decoy crew gets together
The whole gang got together in Basset Nebraska at Lance Kucks Laughing Water Ranch and Outfitters for a couple days of turkey hunting and turkey decoy testing. It was good to see the whole crew and have some time to compare notes and finish 6 or 8 cases of beer.
Lance Kuck got us all together. Lance runs a lot of turkey hunters through and knows alot about chasing the big black birds. First and
foremost he knew where the birds were at, and had a good feel on their travel patterns to get us in front of them. Knowing where they are at certain times of the day is key to getting arrows in these early season birds.
Pack was there with Bozart. Don’t know if I spelled that right, but they called a gobbler from 400 yards away in a new alfalfa field Notty had worked on with Lance. The had to use a gobble call to get the bird to finish, and he came into a 2 jake set and was bumping one of the decoys when Brian missed him with a Bullhead at 1o yards. Decoy had him mad enough he came right back and met his maker when Brian punched a Reign through his vitals and sent him on a permanent dirt nap in the decoys. Poor guy has been trying for years to kill a bird with his bow and he got it done over the best turkey decoy. Rogers?
Constantine got Todd his part time camera guy and himself turkeys as well. Dave worked the same bunch of birds for 3 days straight and never gave up. It was his idea to ditch the hens and go straight meat with
the jake turkey decoys only and it worked well. They had birds in tight every day, and despite issues with dogs, tractors and bulls, the each punched a tag and made for the border. Congrats to both for killing turkeys and making it through the week with the heckling they took from Tim.
They were both very patient and worked hard to get as much educational body language and turkey decoy interaction clips as they could despite troubling circumstances. Hats off to them Wisconsin corn huskers.
Wisconsin is a tough place to grow up and both these guys showed the ill effects. Todd can talk for hours and dominates every conversation, while Dave is very withdrawn and rarely smiles, but he does bring his own soup ladle on every trip. If we ever do a hen turkey decoy he will be our guy for sure.
Then there was Dustin Dustin and Justin. D D and J from here on out. They went south on some land they have hunted for several years and treated the birds like vermin. Arrows were flying and turkeys were dying. They had multiple toms and jakes on the best turkey decoy and they let very
few leave. Looked like a crime scene on video. Sending some yellow flagging tape with them next time. Wait until you see some of the video they got with a go pro this trip. Bad ass. Highlight for them was a set where they used one bow and one release and passed it around in the blind and each killed a jake. Takes a pretty good turkey decoy set to hold their attention that long, and our best turkey decoy helped it happen along with some straight shooting.
Timmy and I killed birds as well. I don’t know if I can remember a trip with so many opportunities. The food was hot, the beer was cold and the birds came to the turkey decoys. And the season is just getting started.
