Turkey decoys love road trips
Turkey decoys love road trips. They love bouncing around in the back or the pick up, sleeping in the cab the whole ride, and just doing what turkey decoys do in the truck. They are patient and wait all year for the travels, and can’t wait to get staked out in the field. Myself not so much. I don’t really care for the travel so much anymore. but I have found a few ways to cope and make the trips as efficient as possible. Here are some spring turkey hunting travel tips.
Turkey decoys know urine is the enemy
You will never get there if you keep stopping to pee. It’s the truth. My turkey decoys never whine for me to pull over and let them out, but my hunting partners always do. It’s poor
planning on their part. You have to be prepared so here is a list:
Eat salty foods as turkey decoys won’t
Salty foods make you retain water. Grab a bag of sunflowers seeds or some salt packets and keep them on hand. I encourage my co pilots to shotgun about 2 tablespoons of salt every hour to help slow the flow. Sneak salt into their pop or water if you can. Salt will kill you, but not today, and we have places to go and turkeys to kill. Eat your salt.
Adult diapers can hold a lot of urine. Grab a 6 pack and they will hold almost that much. I prefer to put them on when I start the trip, and refuse to pull over for anyone else in the truck. Grab your 2 liter bottle of diet dew and slug away while everyone else in the truck squirms. Nobody wants to be the first one to wet their pants, but you can freely wet yours and nobody will ever be the wiser. If you plan to sit in it for a long time make sure you have a layer of vaseline or Desitin on to prevent a rash.
You can always try and pee while the truck is moving. I drive a 1 ton Ford that rides like tank, so if your bringing a bottle in my truck it had better be a big one. An ice cream pail works well, but it’s hard to get the lid on tight enough. Bottle openings are too small, and you never want to go in anything that won’t hold at least twice as much as you can put out. As a final tip, always remember to never try throw any liquids out the front window when the back window is open. Most of it seems like it finds it way back in the truck. Learned that one the hard way driving through New Mexico one fall with a buddy sleeping in the back seat.
Don’t let urine ruin a hunting trip. Plan ahead with these tips for a happy drive. Good luck and happy travels this spring, and I hope these tips help you and your turkey decoys make it to your spot on time.
