Field testing the best jake turkey decoy
I run with a bunch of guys who live to bowhunt, and have tried about every jake turkey decoy there is. This January I tried the ‘best turkey decoy’ on merriams in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Some of our fall tag areas run all the way until the end of January, and with the extremely warm weather we have been enjoying (60’s and 70’s in January?) I figured if it felt like spring to me, maybe the turkeys would feel the same. My new jake turkey decoy in tow, we hit the woods.
First time with the best jake turkey decoy is a charm
I have always said your first sit is the best when hunting with a turkey decoy, but I did not really mean my first time into the woods. I set up in a spot that traditionally holds birds late fall and all winter long, but had no clue if they were there this year. Fall turkey hunting is more a pattern and wait game for gobblers, and I always run a jake turkey decoy. I had a hunch the semi strut pose of this jake turkey decoy, coupled with the tilted back arrogant head posture would be a home run, and I was right. About 45 minutes before the sun hit the horizon the group of young toms crested the hill and made eye contact with my jake turkey decoy. They immediately started the fighting purrs, and I knew it was on. As the whole group boiled down the hill and on top of my jake turkey decoy, I came to full draw and arrowed the closest one. As he crashed into a young cedar tree an amazing thing happened. They all came back- Typically when you drop a bird within 20 yards, the other birds will focus on their fallen comrade and maul him like a red headed step child. Not this time. It’s the first time I have watched the flock refocus on the decoy and come back to slap him around some more. Amazing.
This jake turkey decoy is a home run in my book
I have hunted over a lot of jake turkey decoys in my lifetime, and aside from a well done taxidermy bird, this one trumps. He deserves a better name than best turkey decoy, but that’s not my gig. This spring when my plan includes a jake turkey decoy, I know which one will be in my vest and staked afield.
